1874. John Smith was born 23rd August 1874 at High Street Lockerbie Scotland. PHYL has this b.c.

His parents were Henry Smith (watchmaker) and Elisa Bacon married 7th August 1860 in Liverpool.
Interestingly the above b.c. was obtained on the 18/11/1929, 22 months after his daughter, Phyllis, had married JTR Gunn - why did they or John himself, then aged 55- some sort of pension??? - need it??
They were in Lockerbie by 1871 C & must have moved south to Brighton sometime between John's birth in 1874 & 1881.
1881C John Smith, 6, b.Scotland, is living 3 Barrowcliffe Cottages Brighton with his parents & 2 of his siblings. His future wife, Emily Trelfer, is living in 6 Barrowcliffe Cottages in this census

1901C John Smith, 24, pier erector, b Lockerbie, is living 10 Foundry Street Brighton with his wife & 1 son I rather think think he just found work on the pier in this year. With 4 rooms, it seems odd that his wife did not take care of any of her younger siblings, Alice, & probably William & Queenie, who were in Brighton Workhouse with their father, George Trelfer.
