Ellen Trevethan was a natural historian - I just wish I had noted all the people and anecdotes she told. - Hilary

Hilary - more photos and any more memories please

1880.Ellen Trevethan was born 8/12/1880 to John Elford Trevethan & Matilda Phillips

She was one of 10 children ; she could turn her hand to most practical tasks and made light of skinning rabbits.  I used to watch her but have never skinned a rabbit myself!  She left school at 14 to go into service and never expressed regrets about her lack of formal education.  Instead she made the most of her enthusiasm for history and being a good friend to less able women.

1903. Ellen Mabel Trevethan marries Charles Hailes St. Germans, Jun 1903

She had met Charles Hailes when he was a young soldier posted locally to Cawsand where there was a battery at Penlee, the second headland in Cornwall travelling west from Plymouth. (his home was Limerick).  She said it was mutual love at first sight!  - Hilary

1904. Reginald Walter Hailes born 4/1/1904 in Penlee

1906. Doreen May Hailes was born 6/9/1906 to Charles & Ellen Mabel Falmouth Sep 1906

Charles was posted to Malta and the family went with him before the First WW. ( He had a southern Irish brogue which Cornish locals loved!)  Ellen told me that on returning to Spike Island, Co. Cork, an army posting, they were aware that the journey involved crossing seas dangerous with enemy shipping.

1911C. Charles Hailes , 30, was in the Overseas Military in Tigne, Malta : he was there for 4 1/2 years, I think from ~1909

1919/20. Family address was 19 Beech Road Southville, Bristol

1920-1926/7 . The family were on Spike Island until ~1926, her husband being in charge of the Stores there. He than got a transfer to somewhere in the SW of England .

1936. Her husband, Charles Hailes , 55, died 4/3/1936 Plymouth Mar 1936 . Buried in Maker parish church, seemingly a Monumental Inscription, ref. E-067.-FMP. No probate for this death

John P Trevethan 04 Jul 1866 Male Petty Officer Rn Retired Single 199 3

John P Trevethan 1866 was her elder brother

1943. Her only son, Reginald Hailes, was killed when his ship, the Egret, was hit off the coast of Spain

When Reg was killed in action on HMS Egret I guess I was there, a very small child,  to occupy some of her time at this awful period of grief.  She read to me frequently and we were very close.
Reg had passed second in all Ireland for entry to naval training; good at maths he chose engineering.  I have seen some of his engineering drawings which were immaculate.  Of course he had no chance when Egret was sunk

1963. Ellen M Hailes, 82, died 14/1/1963 St Germans Mar 1963 . Buried in Maker parish church, seemingly a Monumental Inscription, ref. E-067.-FMP . Probate of £377
