Edgar Gosling 1900

Edgar Taylor Gosling born 22/10/1900 at 39 Bertram Street. Has his mother's maiden name- Taylor. Last child of 16 of James Gosling & Jane Taylor .No baptism yet found..

edgar-bc.

I thought he could have had a twin Edward James Gosling whose death was registered in the next quarter. Edgar's b.c. would confirm this, as it would have an hour of birth on it - theory now disproved!!. Anne also remembered her father, Harold, telling her his mother had had 2 sets of twins : if this were so they must have been stillborn, or certainly not registered as births!. But I can actually account for all 16 of the stated - on 1911C- births.: 12 surviving children, plus George Gosling 1877-1887: Gladys Ethel Gosling 1890-1893: Florence Bertha Gosling 1892-1892 &, most likely, Ernest Philip Gosling 1898-1898.

1901C. Edgar Gosling, 5 mths old, with his family at 39 Bertram Street. His father James has changed from being a Joiners Machinist to a baker.

1901C

1910. His mother dies in June.

1911C. Aged 10, still at Bertram Street.

1911C

1912. His father left Cardiff in August and emigrated to St. John New Brunswick, probably leaving him and Louisa in the care of Aunt Annie.

1913. Went to Canada with his sister Louisa. Gosling 1/3/1913.-they arived at St Johns New Brunswick on the Empress of Ireland. Both ages recorded are 2 years too young

Purported to have joined the Canadian Merchant Navy [ maybe influenced by his brother-in-law, Frank Hopkins, who had been in the British Merchant Marines. Drowned at sea? Seemingly not 1914-1918 or 1939-1945 as Merchant Navy Remembrance Books exist, and he is not listed . Not in British merchant Seamen 1918-1935 [ now on FindmyPast] either. But did his sister Louisa name her last child Edgar Taylor Hopkins in Dec 1920 because he had died?. In which case he might have died 1919-1920. Would his death appear in New Brunswick records - once released???

He is the only sibling of Anne's father, Harold, whose death I have been unable to determine

Edgar Taylor Gosling, aged ~16?, and thus ~1916. This photo could have been sent back to Cardiff from Canada or his father, James Gosling, might well have brought it back in 1919.
