James Gosling 1854-1922

1854. James Gosling born 2/2/1854. 3rd son of John Gosling & Elizabeth- nee Annis- Gosling

His siblings were Frederick John Gosling 1846,William Gosling 1849 & George Gosling 1858.
1861C. Living Monkton?, Barton St. Mary, Gloucester, James 7 b. Barton St.Mary, , with brothers Frederick 14 labourer b.Devonshire, William 11 b.Gloster & George 2 b. Barton St. Mary. , & parents John 42 labourer b. Kempsford, & Elizabeth 46 b. Gloster. I think Barton St. Mary & Barton St. Michael were just parts of Gloucester.
on previous page of census John Gosling 46? head, labourer b. Kempsford

1871C. Living in Barton St. Michael, Gloucester , James 17, labourer, with brother George 12 & parents, John, 46, labourer & Elizabeth 56.

1873 . James Gosling, 20, sawyer, of 10 Moor Street, marries Jane Taylor, 18, of Church Street, on 15/9/1873 in St.James near the City, Gloucester. His father was John Gosling, sawyer, and hers Benjamin Taylor, farmer. Banns were read and witnesses were William Gosling [his elder brother 1849] & Maria Howell.

This marriage is recorded in the family bible - image at end of this page
16 children were born to James & Jane 1873-1900. Likely that several baptism records exist in Barton St.Mary. Children born 1882-1892 were baptised in Roath. Births exist in Family Bible -- see end of this page. I do not know who the 16th child was.

1874. Charles Benjamin J Gosling born 13/6/1874 - from bible. Sep 1874 Gloucester to James & Jane Gosling
1875. Catherine Elizabeth Gosling born 22/12/1875 - from bible. Barton St Mary. Mar 1876 Gloucester .
1877. George Ernest Gosling born 10/11/1877- from bible. Gloucester. Must die 1887 - but BMD gives age 0 for this death?? 12/11/1887 from Gill's Genes tree . Church Burial record? or has she got his d.c?? Interestingly, he is included in the family bible, whereas 2 sisters, Gladys 1890 & Florence 1892, who died as infants are not.
1879. Edith Jane Gosling born 4/6/1879- from bible. Sep 1879 Gloucester. She was baptised Roath on 27/3/1906, Edith Jane Gosling, Mrs Angell, to James & Jane, of 39 Bertram Street, he Baker
1879-1880. Family would seem to move from Gloucester to Bedminster, Bristol..
1881C. Living in Bedminster, Somerset, James Gosling aged 27, sawyer, with wife Jane 25 & above 4 children

1881. Albert Edward Gosling born 7/5/1881 -from bible. Jun 1881 Bedminster . Nonsensically, he seems to have been baptised Roath 6/11/1885 to James & Jane, he machinist, of 79 Helen Street.
1883. Annie Matilda Gosling born 10/1/1883 Mar 1883 Bedminster. Baptised at the same time as her younger sister, Miriam, Roath 1/5/1885 to James & Jane, he machinist, of 79 Helen Street.
1883-4. James & Jane seemingly moved from Bedminster- part of Bristol today - to Cardiff.
1884. Miriam Gosling born 21/9/1884 - from bible. Dec 1884 Cardiff. Baptised Roath 1/5/1885 to James & Jane, he machinist, of 79 Helen Street.
Was the Church of St Elvan & All Saints, Singleton Road, about a mile away from their home, the church where these children were baptised?. Albert Edward Gosling was baptised, just Roath given on Findmypast, 4 years old in November 1885. Family then at 79 Helen Street.
1886. Frederick James Gosling 1886-1974 born 21/7/1886, Helen Street, Roath, Cardiff, b.c. . He was baptised Roath 1/10/1886 to James & Jane, he machinist, of 79 Helen Street.
1888. Alfred William Gosling born 26/4/1888- from bible. Jun 1888 Cardiff. No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012
1890 Gladys Ethel Gosling born Dec1890 Cardiff . Dies Mar 1893. Not entered in bible. Her b.c. would tell me where the family were oct-dec 1890, just before the census! Probably baptised in December 1892
1891C. Cannot find James & family.-Not listed in any house in Bertram Street [there in 1901} nor Helen Street [there in 1886] Roath : these 2 streets are very close. According to Gill, a Street directory gives James as living in 39 Bertram Street from 1886 till 1901 and thus the Enumerator has made a mess of what he entered for Bertram Street. She also said James lived at 11 Bertram Street at some time? Also a mention of 13 Bertram Street ??

1891C page for 39 Bertram Street - incorrect!!. Very odd for the enumerator to be crossing over from one side of the street to the other!!
1892 Florence Bertha Gosling born Jun 1892 Cardiff . Dies Dec 1892. 2 children thus died late1892/early 1893- maybe an epidemic?
There is a baptism of a Gladys Bertha Gosling to James & Jane, of 13 Bertram Street, father a Machiner, 13/12/1892 in Roath: she could be either their 1890 or 1892 daughter. Most logical is that she was Gladys Ethel Gosling, aged 2, ill, & her baby sister, Florence Bertha, had just died.
1895 Walter Henry Gosling born 24/5/1895 at 39 Bertram Street, b.c.. Sep 1895 Cardiff . No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012
1896. Harold Enis Gosling born 16/9/1896 at 39 Bertram Street, b.c. He has his grandmother's maiden name Innis-misspelt. No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012
1898. Possibly Ernest Philip Gosling born Mar 1898 Cardiff. Dies Dec 1898. No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012
1899. Louisa Brunetta Gosling born 17/6/1899 at 39 Bertram Street. Sep 1899 Cardiff . Father James a Joiner's Machinist on her b.c. In 1913 Louisa went to Canada with her brother Edgar 1900, her father having already emigrated.. No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012
1900. Edgar Taylor Gosling born 22/10/1900 - Now have his b.c. Father, James, still a Joiners machinist, 39 Bertram Street. No baptism on Findmypast as of Nov 2012. Edgar has his mother's maiden name- Taylor - as a middle name. I thought he could well have been a twin, the other one, Edward James Gosling , dying in the first quarter of 1901 - but NO. . Anne now remembers her father telling her that his mother gave birth to 2 sets of twins - 2 sets?? No other infant deaths in Cardiff 1885-1908! I also checked all Gloucester & Bedminster births & deaths from 1874-1883 and have satisfied myself that neither any sets of twins have died nor has one infant died that could have been a twin of a surviving child!!. So any twin births must have been stillborn.
But I can actually account for all 16 of the stated - on 1911C- births: 12 surviving children, plus George Gosling 1877-1887: Gladys Ethel Gosling 1890-1893: Florence Bertha Gosling 1892-1892 &, most likely, Ernest Philip Gosling 1898-1898.
I thought it likely that all the children, born 1874-1900, were baptised. But, as far as I can ascertain from Gill, the Cardiff parish records have not been checked. But Findmypast has the Roath baptisms of most of his children born 1881-1890. But certainly Edith Jane born 1879 in Gloucester was not baptised: she had herself baptised in Roath in 1906, already married.
1901C. James Gosling, 46, baker, living at 39 Bertram St., Roath, E.Cardiff, with his wife Jane 45 & 7 of their children, aged 1 to 16. Son Walter 1895 was with his sister, Catherine Wooldridge, in London. She married in October 1897 in Battersea.: at this time 2 of her young sisters had just died in Cardiff, so maybe she felt Walter would be healthier in London. There is also a thought ?? that Wooldridge money set James up as a baker.

The shop Jane Gosling run with her family ~1900-1910, was not in their house, but on the corner of Broadway & the next parallel street to the east of Bertram Street . Broadway -aunty Anne Gerrard's house number 144 which is next door but one to the shops James had in Broadway .The Gerrard family later had this one number 141 Broadway. James' main shop was at 139 Broadway - just across the road. Then Bertram Street, numbers 13 and 39. 39 Bertram Street was the house where Walter, Harold, Louisa & Edgar [ & almost certainly Alfred. Gladys & Florence 1888-1892] were born 1895-1900. . 105 Pearl Street was James' first shop : this was a corner shop (corner of Pearl St and Bertram St). . . .??Diamond St (the road is still there but no houses left.)??

1910. His wife Jane Gosling/Taylor dies Roath 11/7/1910. Cardiff Sep 1910 11a.142 aged 55. Does Gill have d.c? Story of coffin??
She was buried in Plot 555 in section W Cardiff cemetery (now Cathays Cemetery). This was bought for £1.2s on 25/07/1910 - after the funeral!!

Gill has the invoice above for her funeral. The undertakers were James Summers ands Son. The entry in the South Wales Echo newspaper Tuesday 12 July 1910 read : .JANE GOSLING ON THE 10TH JULY AT 39 BERTRUM ST, CARDIFF . . JANE, BELOVED WIFE OF JAMES GOSLING, AGED 55 .DEEPLY MOURNED. FUNERAL ON WEDNESDAY AT 3PM.

1910 View of Roath Lake
1911C. James Gosling, 57, baker, widower, 16 children, 4 dead, living in 6 rooms at 39 Bertram St., Roath, with 5 of his children, including Harold Innis Gosling, 14, also a baker. Has the shop round the corner now been given up?

Cannot find any old photo of Bertram Street
1912. James Gosling , b.1854, arrives 14/8/1912 in Montreal Quebec on the Megantic, a ship of British Settlers. He states that he was a Sawyer and intends to practice the same profession in St.John. It is also stated that he is going to his daughter's. I suspect this was an assisted/free immigration ship. Now certain that it was his married daughter Edith , now Edith Angel , who was the daughter living in St.John . She had gone over there in 1908 with 3 children, and another daughter was born in 1909 in New Brunswick. .

Was the photo of James Gosling taken in Cardiff just before he left for Canada?

1913. 1/3/1913. James Gosling is living 151 Metcalfe Street, St. John New Brunswick [ 1912 address for his daughter Edith Angel] when his 2 youngest children, Louisa & Edgar arrive on the Empress of Ireland in St. Johns, from Liverpool .

1914. Named as next of Kin on enlistment papers of his son, Walter Gosling : James Gosling, St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada.
1915. Edith Angel, nee Gosling ,dies, 21/10/1915 leaving 5 children aged 2-11. Her husband is overseas with the COEF until 1919.
1916. Louisa Gosling marries Frank Hopkins 4/4/1916 in St.John. Edgar Gosling said to join the Canadian Merchant Navy.
[Thought James Gosling might return Feb 1914, on the Victorian from St. John to Liverpool , transcribed as 26 -incorrectly?, but could be 76! Thought he was down as no profession but, on second thoughts, is a ditto from entry above, which is farmer!!!
![]()
This CAN NOT be he, as he is down as Next of Kin in Sep1914 on the enlistment papers for his son Walter, and his address is given as St. Johns, New Brunswick.]
1919. J. Gosling, aged 39??- actually 65, Machinist, returns March 1919 aboard the Minnedosa, to 144 Broadway Cardiff - this was Annie Gerrard's address in 1911C. It was very close to where James & Jane had had their corner shop1900-1910 and only 2? streets away from Bertram Street

Once back, he lives with his daughter Annie Gerrard 1883 at 144 Broadway..
1922. James Gosling dies 6/12/1922 aged 69. He actually dies at 30A Cowbridge Road - I think this was Cardiff Workhouse, or maybe the Cardiff Workhouse Infirmary. But Anne say: Cardiff Lode where my Grandfather died was a hospital at that time, not a work house. . Cause of death was1: Chronic nephritis - inflammation of the kidneys; 2: Bronchitis. And his occupation is given as Machinist at Timber Yard, suggesting that this was his work from 1919-1922 in Cardiff. His days of being a baker seemed to have ended in 1912, having only started after October 1900.

The fact that his daughter, Annie Gerrard, seems to have been 'In attendance' was probably just a formality - I feel this was unlikely: she merely obtained the certificate the following day.
Gill has the invoices and bills for his funeral. He was buried in the same plot, 555, as his wife. The funeral was on Monday 11december at 3.00pm . There were 3 entries in the South Wales Echo - on thurs 7 Dec and friday and saturday. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1922 -GOSLING:- ON THE 6TH DECEMBER INST., JAMES GOSLING.FUNERAL FROM 144 BROAD WAY, CARDIFF. MONDAY AT 3PM.GENTleMEN ONLY . There is no head stone on the burial plot in Cathays Cemetery. Cardiff Bereavement Service met Gill and showed her the plot.: their records show that Albert Edward Gosling is also buried with his parents James and Jane Gosling, he dying in 1945.
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Cardiff/ gives details of the history of Cardiff Workhouse/hospital . I do not think that Glamorgan Archives have the Admission Books, just the Minutes of the Guardians for the year he died. So we will probably never know how long he was in there before he died.

.
Family Bible, held by descendants of Louisa 1899 in Canada, only show 10 of his 16 children: maybe all births up to 1888, plus Louisa’s added afterwards.
Jane's birth year does not correspond with BMD entry- likely she was born 1857.
Missing: Gladys 1890 & Florence 1892, who admittedly died very young. Also Walter 1895 Harold 1896 Edgar 1900.
This would suggest that Louisa inherited this bible from her father, and that he & wife Jane had not kept this page up to date after 1888, and that she, Louisa, entered her own 1899 birth.
Thus, I would deduce that the 16th birth, that we do not know about, was either post 1888 or maybe died at birth.:maybe ~1893/4 or post 1900?? Another strong possibility was that Edgar Taylor Gosling born 22/10/1900 had a twin, Edward James Gosling : who died ,aged 0, Mar 1901 Cardiff 11a 302 but I have now disproved this as the b.c. of Edgar Taylor Gosling does not state a time on it.
