John Gosling 1820-1905
1820. A John Gosling was baptised 16/4/1820 in Kempsford to John & Mary Gosling-IGI. . A marriage of a John Gosling to Mary? does not exist on IGI 1810-1813. But there is one 1808 Mary Lowder & John ‘Goslen’ 12 Oct 1808, Great Coxwell, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) There are several John Gosling to a Mary marriages in Wiltshire that could be that of his parents - Gill. To get back any further we would need to look at parish records- baptisms & marriages in the County Archives.
His siblings would seem to be Sarah Gosling 1813-1814, Anna Maria Gosling 1814-1894, William Gosling 1817, Mary Ann Gosling 1822, & Jonathan Gosling 1825-1827, all baptised in Kempsford to John & Mary Gosling. And maybe just Elizabeth Goslin 19 Feb 1809, and Richard Goslin 25 Dec 1810 baptised Shrivenham - 9 miles distant- to John & Mary Goslin.
1841C. Cannot definitively find our John Gosling aged 21. There is a male servant aged 20 at Highworth, not born in Wiltshire, who could be he - Highworth only ~ 4 miles SE of Kempsford. Also, a John Gosling, aged 15-19 [ ages rounded down!], ag.labourer, in Fairford - this ~3 miles from Kempsford where he was born: but age should read 20 - since he was actually 21. The census date in 1841 was 06 June and he was baptised on 16 Apr 1820. So unlikely to be our John.

1845. John Gosling, labourer, married Elizabeth Inniss 29/6/1845 Jun 1845 Dursley 11.393. John Gosling married Elizabeth Inniss in St. John, Slimbridge parish church . Parents John Gosling labourer & Solomon Inniss, post boy. Witnesses William Gosling X & William Mabbeth . Neither the bride nor groom could write. William Gosling most likely his brother, born 1817 -IGI- and who is living Slimbridge in 1851C, married and with 3 children, 1-5. .

Dursley is south of Gloucester, about halfway to Bristol . Slimbridge ~4 miles north of Dursley, 15-20 miles south of Gloucester, and a fair way from Kempsford!.
.
Slimbridge Parish Church.
1846. John & Elizabeth Gosling have moved south to Devon, near Totnes, This is odd!- why travel all that way for work?.
1846. First child Frederic John Gosling born Rattery, Dec 1846 Totnes, Devon. Spelling as on BMD entry! He was baptised in St Nicholas Gloucester on 29/9/1847 -IGI- this only discovered 24/1/2014!
A possible reason that Frederick was born in Rattery, was that John & Elizabeth Gosling - or at least Elizabeth Gosling - could have been down there to visit George and Emma Norman, at Marley Garden House, Rattery, where George was employed as a gardener.
Emma's maiden surname was Kelson and she originates from Gloucester. In 1841 Emma Kelson was a ‘Farm Servant’ in the Barton Regis area of Bristol, Gloucestershire; while Elizabeth was a F.S. living in Gloucester and they may have met there. Again, it might seem a bit thin, but so far, it’s the only plausible explanation I can come up with. - Philip

His 1905 newspaper death notice states that he worked in the Timber yards for 60 years. He worked at Treadwells Yard, working on the timber that was used in the huts sent out from Gloucester in the Crimean War - but does not seem to have become aa actual sawyer until 1861 at the earliest
