The National Archives, WO 97/369/48 1825-1842 - have a record for a John Cooper, b. Old Machar, serving in the 16th Foot, discharged aged 33- if our John Cooper, that would be ~1841, but son Robert was born in 1843 in the Armed Forces, 79th Foot.
