Bernard Rice ~1804- 1868.
1823-1831 Bernard Rice married Martha Pole , probably in Ireland. Very unlikely Martha Powell, Macroom 1809, bapt. to an Edward Powell - this from McCourt family tree - now in email contact with her. Several Ancestry trees give her as Martha Powell, but the 1831 IGI entry for the baptism of her first child states Pole- possible 1838-1853 state b.cs. give her as Martha Powell
Descendants- Lindsey, McCourt Ancestry tree - of his son John Rice 1835 think he may have had brothers John ~1799, Owen ~1802 and Luke~1801: these 3 all in Louth? 1841C. I doubt/doubted the last 2 as these names not given to any of Bernard's sons . In 1851C there is a John Rice, 52, hawker, b.Ireland also living in Spring Gardens as a lodger , just 5 houses away from Barney Rice. An Owen Rice , 38, hawker, b. Ireland is living Aswell lane in Louth in 1841C- but could not find him indexed on FMP nor on Ancestry, just by searching all Aswell lane ~ p. 13 on the same Louth return as Bryan in Spring Gardens on Ancestry ! Now found on FMP!
| Owen | Rice | Male | 38 | 1803 | Ireland |
An Owen Rice, aged 81, dies Louth Sep 1877 - so where is he in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses??
But I have so far found no evidence of a Luke, except for an 1865 Caistor death entry for a 64 year old - do not know how anyone knows this, before ages put on bmd!! - McCourt family tree states it, but unproven - Luke Rice- no census entries!. Also a Luke Rice was born to the other Thomas Rice,1835, from Sligo, in 1865 - so any older Luke more likely to be from this family . The 1865 death could be of a previous Luke born to Thomas, Sligo
By 1831 they are in Market Rasen, then in Louth by 1835. .
1837. Thomas Rice born Louth Dec1837 to Bernard/Bryan/Barney Rice and Martha Pole, who would have married ~1830, maybe back in Ireland, although 1841C does not give Ireland as Matty's birthplace . This b.c would confirm Martha's maiden name, but would not tell us from where they came in Ireland
1841C. Bryan Rice, 35 - ages rounded down! - , hawker, is living with his wife and 4 children in Spring Gardens Louth
| Bryan | Rice | Male | 35 | 1806 | Ireland | |
| Matty | Rice | Female | 30 | 1811 | - | |
| Mary | Rice | Female | 10 | 1831 | Lincolnshire, England | |

| Thomas | Rice | Male | 3 | 1838 | Lincolnshire, England | |
| Barry | Rice | Male | 1 | 1840 | Lincolnshire, England |
Barny & Martha also had : Mary 1831- 1876, baptised 19/1/1831 in Market Rasen RC to Brian Rice and Matty Pole - IGI, marrying Mooney in 1851, John 1835- descendants Lindsay McCourt, email contact, Barry/Barney/Bernard 1840-1873 , Bridget 1843 & Martha A 1853. .
1851C. Barney Rice, 50, ag labourer, is living with his wife and 5 children in Spring Gardens Louth . Also a niece with her son. Mary born Market Rasen other 4 children born Louth
| Barney | Rice | Head | Married | Male | 50 | 1801 | Agr Labourer | Ireland | |
| Martha | Rice | Wife | Married | Female | 55 | 1796 | - | Ireland | |

| Catherine | Stinson | Niece | Married | Female | 27 | 1824 | Ag Lab's Wife | Ireland | |
| Michael | Stinson | - | - | Male | 2 | 1849 | - | Moulton, Lincolnshire, England |
Cannot find a Stinson marriage to a Catherine, not the birth of Michael!!. Nor can I find either of them in 1861C!
3/10/2020 received the following from a Gary Smith : We are direct line to Thomas` brother John and have the copy of the Census document. On your clickable page for Barney (a.k.a. Bryan in 1841 and Barnard in 1861) you remarked about the niece Catherine Stinson having no traceability. On the document I looked at all the capital H and S letters and was beginning to believe it may be a H instead of S. Until...Two doors away (26) Patrick Stinson (possible father to Catherine ?) has a sharp crossing of the T on his Christian and surname and worst of all... the S in Spring Garden looks similar; as does the H in Harriet at the 25th house ! So, to summarize... Stinson could be the lesser known Hinson if you wish to search for Hinsons to help your trace. My partner, Julie and I take great pleasure from searching family trees, her Herrick, my Smith and Eileen`s Rice. We have a 1900`s map of Louth and `Streets Of Louth` book that shows the houses that are now demolished or still present. I am also looking at Marbutts for Eileen`s nieces and co.
1856. His brother John got married to Mary Ann Avey in St James' C of E in Gt Grimsby, he, Thomas, was a witness, his mark. Also sister Bridgit, who seemed to sign her name, as did John - West Ancestry Family Tree . John Rice died in 1904, leaving £1071, his wife Mary Ann Rice/Avey the executor- she died 1916. .
1861C. Bernard Rice, 58, hawker, says married, lodger, is living with 2 sons but no wife, at 30 Kidgate Louth .

| John | Hunt | Lodger | Unmarried | Male | 27 | 1834 | Hawker | Ireland Conway |
Conway Ireland does not exist!!. Could possibly read Cousey??.
His wife, Martha Rice, 60, married, is living with daughters Bridget Rice 18 and Martha A Rice 8 in Pincushion Square, Gt Grimsby, son John Rice, 25, married and daughter Mary Mooney, 30, are living in the same square, on the previous census page. Mistranscribed as Martha Rea on FMP. I cannot find a Bmd birth entry for Martha, supposed 1853! daughter.
So she has left Louth 1851-1861
| Martha | Rea | Wife | Married | Female | 60 | 1801 | - | Corry, Invernessshire, Scotland | |
| Bridget | Rea | Daughter | Unmarried | Female | 18 | 1843 | - | Louth, Lincolnshire, England | |
| Martha A | Rea | Daughter | - | Female | 8 | 1853 | - | Louth, Lincolnshire, England |
Her birthplace actually reads as Cosey, Ireland - so a large mistranscription here!!. No such place as Cosey!!- similar to the Conway written for her husband !
1868. Bernard Rice, 64, dies Caistor Dec 1868. The Caistor district includes Grimsby but not Louth, so he obviously followed Martha to Grimsby after the 1861C. . Unsurprisingly, no probate!
1871C. Bernard has died . The 1872 d.c would prove that the below Martha is our Martha Rice here - the informant should be one of her children, and should say who was her husband- but fairly confident this is she .
Martha Rice 70, receiving parish aid, East Street, Gt Grimsby
| Martha | Rice | Head | - | Female | 70 | 1801 | - | Ireland |
1872. Martha Rice, 64, dies Caistor Jun 1872 - would suggest a birth of ~1808, but censuses indicate ~1801
Have also contacted an Atkin anc.family tree, just 66 people, descended from John Rice 1836 thru' daut. Mary Rice
I am doing research for a friend, Anthony Hill, who has Bernard ~1804 as his 3xggrandfather, he coming down the line Thomas Rice 1837, William Bernard Rice 1863, Frances Mary Rice 1892- his paternal grandmother
Could you tell me how you have got the surname Powell= have you got any of the children's birth certs?
Will willingly give you my website where all my research has been put
