His next of kin was his mother Mrs Annie Smith, Strat Villa, Bannock, Bonnybridge. Interesting that he gives his mother's surname as Smith

1923. Ethel Phyllis Smith born to William & Anne in Latter Street, Dumbarton

1930 . Anne Morrison Smith was born to William & Anne .on 31/8/1930 in Park Street, Dumbarton. Her parents had married on 10/8/1920 in the parish of St Thomas Higham, Norwich

I know they were highly respected. I can’t remember anyone calling them by their christian names, always Mr Smith or Mrs Smith, even their neighbours!! My grandfather enlisted in the Home Guard during WW2, but I don’t know what rank he held. I remember him telling me that his unit set fire to the moors above Dumbarton to try to fool German bombers into thinking that the fires were the shipyards in Dumbarton. Not sure if they were successful. He was made a Justice of The Peace and sat in Dumbarton Sheriff Court. They had a very big rear garden and they grew all their own vegetables plus a lot of summer fruit.
